North America

In the far north is the Arctic tundra, and south of this, a wide boreal conifer zone, reminiscent of the corresponding zone in Europe and Siberia. It is dominated by species of spruce, fir and larch, and large areas are covered by bogs and marshes. Along the west coast from southern Alaska to northern California, there are lush, species-rich coniferous forests housing, which are home to some of the world’s tallest trees (including Douglas firs and redwoods).

In the eastern part of the continent, the border between the tundra and coniferous forest is further south. Around the Great Lakes and in the New England states, the natural vegetation is mixed forests of a type similar to the forests of central Scandinavia, though with more species. In eastern and central United States, there are species-rich deciduous forests, with species of oak, ash, walnut, chestnut, hickory, tulip tree and (in the Southern states) magnolia.
